Why Regular Blood Pressure Testing is Important
Many people with high blood pressure are unaware that they have it; it can lead to serious health complications if left unchecked. That’s why, following on from Blood Pressure UK’s Know Your Numbers! Week, we are looking to raise awareness for home blood pressure monitoring, and how it can help you take back control of your health. Keep reading to find out the best blood pressure monitor, blood pressure machine, and blood pressure reader.
What is Know Your Numbers! Week?
Know Your Numbers! Week focuses on reaching those who are unaware that they have high blood pressure, allowing them to get the support and treatment that they need. It also touches upon the two numbers used to record your blood pressure, which are: systolic pressure and diastolic pressure.
How is blood pressure measured?
Blood pressure is recorded using two numbers, which are as follows:
- Systolic pressure, which is the higher number. This describes the force at which your heart pumps blood around your body.
- Diastolic pressure, which is the lower number, indicates the level of resistance to the blood flow in your blood vessels.
Both of these numbers are measured using millimetres of mercury, or mmHg.
How can I figure out what the numbers mean on a blood pressure monitor, blood pressure machine, and blood pressure reader?
Generally, your results can be interpreted as follows:
- A result of 140/90mmHg or higher under the age of 80 is considered to be high blood pressure.
- If you are aged 80+, high blood pressure is characterised as 150/90mmHg and above.
- Blood pressure of between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg is considered to be ideal.
However, it is important to note that blood pressure varies from person to person. That’s why it is important to regularly check your blood pressure and visit your GP if you are concerned. Further advice surrounding high blood pressure, as well as a calculator to find out what your reading means, can be found on the NHS website.
